We were called on the day when the intensive care unit at the specialized children's hospital "Prof. Dr. Ivan Mitev" closed. At the end of 2019, the intensive care unit stopped accepting sick children due to a lack of anesthesiologists and pediatricians.
It was one of the hardest conversations, in one of the darkest places – empty but full of silent accusations about the human right to help taken away and the weight of the doctor's cross.
Two doctors were still on duty because they could not bring back children in critical condition. They asked for help. They said: If we improve the conditions, if we show that we care, the doctors might come back to take care of the children…
The urgent campaign for intensive care - 4 boxes and one corridor - has begun.
We had to paint the black moldy and cracked walls. Let's fix the tiles a bit. Let's put blinds on the boxes so that the mothers don't pass out, watching the doctors fight for the life of a child in the next box. To replace the ancient 15-year-old air conditioners, which are especially important for patients in the summer. To replace cabinets crammed with documents and life-saving medications – 30-year-old cabinets stuck with cardboard and duct tape to keep them from falling apart. Let's fix the electrical network a bit, because the life-saving equipment now comes with 5 power strips and their cables are tangled like guts in the system racks. Let's draw children's fairy-tale pictures so that the children will not be afraid in the corridor, which looks like a white tunnel to nowhere.
About 30 people joined, volunteers, parents connected by the Project#for the Good Group on Facebook. We worked for free. A donor provided and installed the required 3 new ones. A manufacturer donated 2 new refrigerators for medical preparations. The new blinds between the hospital boxes and the blinds for the windows are from a donor. A family donated an infusion set. Donors provided 40 sets of children's bedding. Cleaning after the renovation is done by donors.
BGN 22,000 was collected in the donation account at Platformata.bg. With them, we paid companies for professional plastering, plastering and painting, for replacing moldings and tiles, for furniture and furnishings, for radiator boxes. With part of the donated funds, we purchased 4 pediatric beds, 4 anti-decubitus mattresses; blood collection chair, racks for systems, drug and preparation cabinet, X-ray viewing screen (negativescope), blood pressure monitor and pulse oximeter, also suitable for babies.
For the first time, the children's intensive care unit received an intraosseous venous source machine - it is used to quickly infuse drugs directly into the bone if the medic cannot place an IV system in the child.
