The completely renovated Department of Pediatrics was opened on April 11, 2024. in the regional hospital in Lovech.
Over BGN 260,000, collected entirely from donations, was invested in the large-scale "Firefly" project of the "For Good" Foundation, implemented jointly with the "America for Bulgaria" Foundation. The opening was held in the presence of officials, representatives of the organizers, donors, doctors, patients, etc.
The event was honored by the deputy mayors of Lovech Municipality, the Regional Governor of the city of Lovech and representatives of RZI Lovech.
14 hospital rooms were completely renovated in twelve months under the "Firefly" project in the children's department of the "Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov" AD, thanks to the unification of organizations and local donors. 4 sanitary units were also built for maximum comfort during the stay. This turned the children's department into a European, modern, comfortable, colorful and functional place for treating children, which few hospitals in the country can boast of.
The premises have been completely reconstructed - new medical furniture and equipment have been delivered, the walls are painted with beautiful and inspiring drawings, the floor is covered with antibacterial flooring. There are separate sectors for infants, small children and adolescents. Parents accompanying children will have kitchenettes with appliances available.
A new waiting room has been built in the department. The doctor's offices and manipulation rooms have been renewed. The main entrance, lobby and reception office look new and modern.
A free play area has been set aside where young patients can feel like children again and return to their natural home environment.
"Keep doing good and changing the world"
said in his welcome speech the director of the Bulgarian Hospital, Dr. Viktor Taslakov, and presented certificates of appreciation to representatives of the America for Bulgaria Foundation and the For Good Foundation.
Project "Svetulka" aims for every children's department in the hospitals in Bulgaria to have a standard, in them the child patient will be the center of the treatment. Creating such an environment, as it is in the department in Lovech, is only the first step. It is important to continue with a change in relations, in communication between doctors, children and parents, pointed out Nadezhda Rangelova - Boyadjieva, chairwoman of the "For the Good" foundation. She thanked the partners from "America for Bulgaria" and all the donors who supported the project. For me, the biggest change that "Svetulka" makes is exactly in two directions - the change in the attitudes of the society and the change in the understanding of the doctors of what a children's ward should look like. It's an avalanche process. When society realizes what a department should look like, it starts demanding it from all participants in the process, added Rangelova.
"We are seeing the results of the complete transformation of the children's ward. It will contribute to improving the health and lives of children, parents and the community of Lovech"
shared Nancy Schiller, president of the America for Bulgaria Foundation.
Also present at the event was Dr. Nena Osorio, a pediatrician with extensive clinical experience at Weill Cornel Medical Center in New York. She is in Bulgaria at the invitation of the "America for Bulgaria" Foundation to share experience and good practices. Dr. Osorio was very impressed and confirmed that this was the right path of change.
