We have opened a Svetulka department in Karnobat!
BGN 170,000 were invested in the change of the pediatrics department at the Karnobat Medical Center. Donations in kind amount to about BGN 24,000. The renovation of the children's department under the Svetulka project of the Za Dobroto Foundation was carried out with the support of A1 Bulgaria, Esetere Bulgaria and the Municipality of Karnobat. The official opening of the transformed department took place at the end of July 2024.
This change has been a long-standing dream for the entire pediatrics team. This dream coincided with ours – to create spaces that do not look like a hospital.
The children's ward in Karnobat is currently modern, cozy and provides all conditions for full treatment of small patients. For them and their companions, conditions close to the home environment are provided, which will support the recovery process.
The ceremonial opening was attended by the mayor of the Karnobat municipality - Georgi Dimitrov, the manager of the Karnobat Medical Center - Dr. Nikolay Kolibarov, the head of the pediatric department - Dr. Ekaterina Andreeva, doctors, representatives of the "For Good" foundation, medical and administrative staff and others.
The hospital team of MBAL Karnobat has already won the trust of the children and their parents from the region, and thanks to the "Svetulka" project, work will also be done to change the emotional environment so that the child-patient is placed at the center of the treatment. Residents of the municipalities of Karnobat, Sungurlare and Aytos, as well as smaller settlements in this region, rely on the hospital care provided by the pediatric department. The children's department provides the treatment of over 600 small patients per year, which is above the national average. Four doctors, six nurses and two orderlies will take care of the children in the renovated ward. The transformation of pediatrics in Karnobat will significantly improve the material conditions for the treatment of an expanded range of child-patients and the working environment of doctors.
The hospital rooms, which have been renovated, have 16 beds to accommodate the small patients and the same number for their companions. In addition to them, the three rooms that will be used by the medical staff, the two manipulation rooms, the lobby and the reception office, also have a new look. The walls in all the rooms are painted with beautiful drawings, subject to the theme of "Grandma's Garden", and the floor in the entire department is covered with antibacterial flooring. For the convenience of patients and their companions, a new waiting room, two additional bathrooms, and kitchenettes have been built. Great attention has also been paid to the creation of the bright, comfortable, colorful and full of toys children's corner.
Nadezhda Rangelova, chairwoman of the "For the Good" Foundation, presented the activities carried out in the children's department under the "Firefly" project and added: "Children remain children, even when they are sick. It is their right to remain socially active and integrated. It is our duty as adults to guarantee it to them. "Svetulka" is a benchmark for a welcoming, colorful, clean hospital facility, bright, warm and cozy. Children feel at home in it. "Firefly" is an environment of empathy and understanding, awareness and accessibility, support and cooperation between child patients, parents and doctors."
The manager of the Karnobat Medical Center, Dr. Nikolay Kolibarov, commented: "At MBAL Karnobat, we have done and continue to do many repairs. It is only now, however, that I understand how it is proper to make them happen, and I am glad to see what care was taken by all involved in the process. I hope that during their stay, our little patients will forget that they are in a children's ward and associate the time here with games. I thank the foundation and the donors, thanks to which our pediatrics is one of the few in Bulgaria that can boast of such a modern treatment environment."
