On November 15, 2023, we launched something special – the beginning of "Firefly" at Dobrich Hospital.
With great faith, a shared cause, and a light in our hearts, we began another step towards our dream: hospitals that don't look like hospitals. Together with the team of Dobrich General Hospital and with the exceptional support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation, we stood shoulder to shoulder with the local community to change the pediatric ward in Dobrich.
The event was warm and inspiring. Dr. Georgi Zhelyazkov – director of the hospital – welcomed us with the words that this is one of the best initiatives that have ever happened in the medical institution. And it was an honor for us to hear this. The hall was attended by representatives of business, non-governmental organizations, doctors, teachers, journalists – people who did not just attend, but chose to be part of the change.
We presented the project with emotion and responsibility. We shared that "Firefly" is not just a renovation. It is care. It is coziness. It is the feeling that you are in an environment where your child is safe, and you - as a parent - are not alone.
We told how this idea was born from an exhibition comparing home and hospital environments. How we were pained by the difference. And how, instead of turning a blind eye, we decided to act. Today, we have already renovated 10 wards in the country. Thousands of children have passed through them, who are ill in a colorful, warm, orderly and humane environment. And every time we start a new project, we feel that we are a little closer to real change.
Svetulka Dobrich will be a ward divided into zones – for babies, for young children and for adolescents. With a play area that will bring back childhood to children. With a functional design inspired by the spirit of the region. With a space that will respect the child as a person – and will support the work of doctors and the care of parents.
On February 20, 2025, together with hundreds of like-minded people and friends from Dobrich, we celebrated more than just a completed project – we celebrated a dream come true. We officially opened the renovated children's ward at Dobrich Hospital – our 10th "Firefly".
The event became a true celebration of hope, faith and empathy. The transformed ward shone with light, color and warmth – created with the children, their families and the medical teams in mind.
With this project, we have proven once again that the #Mission is possible when there is a community that believes in the meaning and acts together. The transformation was the result of the efforts of the For Good Foundation, Dobrich Hospital, the America for Bulgaria Foundation, local businesses, and over 35 donors and volunteers.
Our chairwoman, Nadezhda Rangelova, shared at the opening:
"Today we made another dream come true. We didn't just renovate a ward - we gave the children of Dobrich a place where they are treated with care, not fear. A place where the child is not just a patient, but a person."
The ceremony began with the blessing of water, performed by Father Peter, who donated an icon of Saint Stilian, the patron saint of children. Mayor Yordan Yordanov, representatives of the Municipal Council, donors, citizens and many children were also part of the emotional moment.
Particularly exciting was the participation of the children from Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and the "Slaveyche" Kindergarten, who greeted the guests with songs and dances - a symbol of hope, cheerfulness and love.
The ward is now unrecognizable. The rooms are warm, colorful and cozy, with separate sections for babies, toddlers and teenagers. There are kitchen areas for parents, play areas for young patients, renovated doctor and nurse rooms, manipulation and sanitary facilities. The environment is designed to soothe and support – not only bodies, but also hearts.
"Firefly" is not just a renovation. It's a philosophy. It's an opportunity to give children a healing environment that feels more like a home than a hospital. Because we believe that care is manifested in every wall, every blanket, every word. Because healing is not only in the hands, but also in the atmosphere.
With the renovated ward in Dobrich, hundreds more children will receive not only treatment, but also respect, peace of mind, and the opportunity to be children, even in the most difficult moments.
