Firefly Project has chosen its new location for 2026 – "Dr. Tota Venkova" Gabrovo Hospital

Among 11 departments that applied, we chose the pediatric department of the hospital, which is named after an exceptional woman - Tota Venkova.

Tota Venkova (1855–1935) was the first Bulgarian female doctor to graduate. Born in Gabrovo, she dedicated herself to caring for people as a young girl – as a nurse in the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation, and later graduated in medicine and returned to Bulgaria to treat her compatriots. Her entire life was marked by dedication and courage – an example of how dedication leaves a light for generations to come.

We are impressed by the progressive mindset of the hospital management and the state in which we found the park space when we first visited the ward.
After several meetings with Ministry of Health, we strongly believe that this project can be the pilot model that will lay the foundations for a national program to improve the environment in children's wards across the country. We would be happy if the Ministry supported the initiative financially - beyond the already approved capital expenditures for the hospital.

We believe that together we will achieve an environment in which every child will feel better, calmer, and closer to home – under the protection of the light that Tota Venkova left behind.

From the For Good Foundation, we thank Nikola Rahnev and Zhaneta Kircheva, who connected us with the hospital management and made this project possible.

Stay tuned for more exciting news from Gabrovo very soon!
