A big step for "Firefly" - a joint project with the "Ivan Mitev" Pediatrics

The Pediatrics team approached us with an idea – to build a space and process together that would truly work for children with diabetes and their families. After 10 complete transformations of departments across the country, the For Good Foundation already has proven experience in creating a healing environment where children feel more at ease and medical teams have the conditions to do their jobs better.

 

What makes the project particularly special is the way it is being implemented. The hospital itself secured the funding through a program of the Ministry of Health, and turned to us for the overall concept, architectural solution, and expert implementation.

 The architectural project was created by "Atelier 3" based on a concept by the foundation team, in collaboration with the hospital team and with a clear vision for the future of this space - the first of its kind training for self-sustaining care in a children's hospital in Bulgaria.

The challenge here was great because the existing space in the hospital required adaptation and reorganization.

 

The available space is not large, but we are transforming it into a 4-in-1 function room that will serve for:

training for children with diabetes

individual meetings with a psychologist

trainings and groups for parents

games and activities for children

The new space will be a place where families will receive support, information and reassurance.

The For Good Foundation is funding the architectural project and the expert work on it.

 

This is the model we are looking for:

the hospital should be a driving force,

the state to provide the resource,

and we – to add content, meaning, and vision.

The project is being implemented in partnership with the @Future Values team - Dr. Slaveyko Dzhambazov and Ioana Vutova, with whom we are building on the clean physical environment with a new model of care based on the Value-Based Healthcare methodology - healthcare based on patient benefit.

 

With their participation in the project, an analysis of the current practice in the Endocrinology Clinic will be carried out, the patient's path will be followed and a proposal will be made for an updated financing model, inspired by successful structures such as the Dutch Diabeter - where the emphasis is on prevention, knowledge and constant support, and not only on hospitalization. The project is based on the understanding that an informed and prepared parent and a calm child are key to dealing with the disease.

 

 For us, this is another big step in the development of "Firefly". We are building on, expanding the direction and opportunities towards integrated care for children with chronic diseases. And again, we are doing it together - with partners, with doctors, with parents and with people who believe that health is achievable only with a comprehensive approach, including treatment, therapeutic environment, understanding, human attitude and proper communication.

At the Foundation for Good, we believe that integrated care is the way forward – and we are already taking steps towards it.
