The harrowing story of baby Maria was told on Monday by journalist Vasilena Grabcheva. On Wednesday, more than 60 donors had already contacted Dimi Filadova with an offer to help with money, with the search and delivery of the medicines and consumables for the tiny child.
She was born a year ago and her whole world is the hospital ward of the Third City Hospital in Sofia. The child has diabetes, was abandoned by the parents, the hospital does not know who they are. The closest thing to a family that Maria knows is nurse Maria - to whom she says her first words "mama", "daddy" and "am-am".
The baby constantly needs a sensor to control blood sugar, medication and special food. The hospital buys the vitally important medicines, food and consumables for the child by searching and finding donors and with its own money. For the health fund, which should be obliged to provide the funds from the joint health insurance that we all pay, baby Maria does not exist. Since there are no parents, there is no one to go through the bureaucratic process of disbursing the money. There is a social worker assigned to Maria from the "Vazrazhdane" municipality, but the hospital does not even know his name. Maria cannot be adopted because there is no relinquishment of parental rights. Doctors say the child could go to a foster family, but it's unclear why that hasn't happened.
Maria is not the concern of the state, which is writing strategies for its demographic problem. Only the doctors from Treta Gradska and donors who have found out about the absurd case care.
The foundation's campaign started on its own with Dimitrina's Facebook post and 56 phone calls and personal messages on Tuesday, October 26, on her anniversary.
By Wednesday evening, the funds for 30 sensors had almost been raised. One sensor costs BGN 120, Maria needs 3 per month, so far she has 10 months. Dimi and another lady bought 2 boxes each of the Diokal special supplement and they will be delivered today. A third donor wanted to provide 4 more boxes. With 2 more - to make 10, the issue will be resolved in a year. Dimi organizes the delivery of Frizolak purees, because the child is already eating, of walking shoes, clothes, a high chair, musical toys and books.
Maria does not only need the things on which her health depends. But also the little things of children, socialization and normality, a family environment in these first years, which are most important for her development.
We don't know if next year at the same time it won't turn out that we have to mobilize good people to donate to Mary again. Whether institutions, among which the irresponsibility of the state for this child and for children like her is distributed, will do their job. Or society will have to do their job.
