On Friday, April 3, at the Pirogov University Hospital for Children and Young People, we launched the first case discussion groups inspired by the Balint Group method. A group of pediatric surgeons, pediatricians, and anesthesiologists from the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Pirogov participated in this first meeting, in which together we examined a real case from their practice. A situation in which the medical team encountered a difficulty not in the diagnosis, but in the communication, in the dynamics with the patient and his family.

The beginning was strong, and the participants were inspiring, open and ready to share, think and seek solutions beyond the obvious.

Why are these meetings so important?

In medicine, we seek clinical solutions, we talk about protocols and outcomes. But there is an invisible part of care, the one that happens between the words, in the emotions, in the difficult conversations, in the moments when there is no „right answer.“.

It is there that such case discussions, inspired by Balint groups, provide a space for finding solutions and support.
✨ They create a safe environment in which doctors can speak openly about difficult cases without fear of evaluation, thereby reducing the risk of burnout and the sense of isolation that so often accompanies working in healthcare.
✨ They help build deeper empathy for the patient beyond the diagnosis, but as a person with experiences, fears, and expectations.
✨ They develop skills for better communication, especially in the most difficult moments when difficult news needs to be delivered, when there is tension with parents, or when trust is shaken due to strong emotions.
✨ They provide an opportunity for reflection, for awareness of one's own reactions, boundaries, and blind spots, which is key to professional development.
✨ And last but not least, they transform „difficult cases“ from a source of tension into a source of understanding and growth.
For us, this is a natural extension of the Foundation's mission. #ForGood for better children's healthcare. If with the Firefly project we are changing the environment, then with the course in Therapeutic Communication in Pediatrics and case discussion groups, we are upgrading the way communication happens with a focus on caring for child patients and their parents, but also medical specialists.
