The Firefly project - a hospital that doesn't look like a hospital - is often perceived as a renovation project - new walls, colors, furniture, toys and cozier rooms in the children's wards.

But the truth is that it is much more than that. The material change of the environment is only the beginning.

The real transformation is in attitudes – in the way society begins to think about children's healthcare. In the standard we begin to demand as parents and citizens. In the belief that the hospital can and should be a more humane place.

The Firefly Project imposes precisely this – a new standard. A standard that shows that children deserve an environment tailored to their vulnerability, fears, and need for security, and that this environment is not a luxury, but part of the necessary care for their faster recovery.

But perhaps the greatest strength of the project lies elsewhere. “Firefly” shows what a strong civil society can do. One of the most beautiful recent examples of this is Gabrovo.

The donation campaign for the transformation of the children's ward at the "Dr. Tota Venkova" Hospital under the "Firefly" project began on December 1, 2025. In just three months, the community of Gabrovo and the region raised over 180,000 euros.

This is trust and determination to act – from individual donations and corporate support to in-kind donations, charity bazaars, concerts, sporting events, musical performances and more, and more.

 Everyone is included.

From the youngest children in kindergartens, through students and young people, to professionals, entrepreneurs and the elderly. When a donation becomes not a one-time gesture, but a shared value, society becomes stronger, communities become more resilient, and people begin to feel that change does not come from outside, but is created from within.

A culture of giving makes long-term solutions possible and teaches future generations that caring for others is part of being a citizen.

💙This is not a new story in Gabrovo. Almost a century ago, industrialist Pencho Semov left a huge part of his estate for charitable purposes. His summer villa, according to his will, was turned into a nursing home for the elderly after his death.

The motto, which still stands today inscribed next to the fountain in the villa's park, reads: "Love, Labor, Perseverance."„

It's as if these three words describe the spirit of today's Gabrovo community. The old hospital building, part of this heritage, was sold by the hospital management, and it was these funds that became the initial capital for the transformation of the children's ward.

A charitable story from the past helped start a new story of caring for children in the present. This is the power of a community that remembers and preserves its values.

The Firefly Project will create a children's ward in Gabrovo with 10 rooms with separate bathrooms, areas for parents, and spaces for play and activities.
„"Firefly" shows that when people unite around a meaningful cause, the result is greater than the sum of their individual efforts.

And when a community decides that its children deserve better care, change becomes inevitable.
