With each transformed children's ward under the "Firefly" project, we take another step towards a big, common goal - the creation of National program for modernization of children's hospital wards in Bulgaria.
After three years of active field work, in which we showed with real examples what a modern, functional and welcoming children's ward can look like, we took the next important step:
📨 We sent an official letter to:
- The Health Committee of the National Assembly;
- Ministry of Health;
- All members of parliament from Dobrich district.
What did we offer?
In the letter to the institutions we presented a specific plan for the development and implementation of a National Program for the Modernization of Children's DepartmentsOur main goal is to create a sustainable state mechanism for changing the hospital environment, based on the good practices and proven results of the Firefly project.
Why are we launching a National Program for Children's Wards?
A few days ago we discovered the completely renovated pediatric ward at Dobrich Hospital – The 11th in a row within the framework of the “Firefly” project. It is built according to European standards, with new functionality, play areas and individualized solutions for children, parents and the team. This department treats about 2,000 children annually.
With its distribution into three sectors (infants, young children and adolescents), a completely restructured intensive sector, new flooring with antibacterial coating and separate kitchen corners in each room - the department in Dobrich is a model that can and should be implemented throughout the country.
What does the National Program for Hospital Children's Wards include?
The For Good Foundation offers its expertise and experience from the field to support the implementation on a national scale. Our proposal includes:
- Detailed analysis of the condition of all children's wards in the regional hospitals;
- Preparation of a specific financial plan – an average of BGN 600,000 per department;
- Establish a national mechanism for financing and monitoring results;
- Introducing standards for design, functionality and therapeutic environment.
According to our analyses, the transformation of all departments will cost around 15 million leva – an investment that will provide better healthcare, security for parents, and more dignified working conditions for medical staff.
What's next in the Firefly National Program initiative?
🔹 We officially invited the Health Commission to a meeting to present in detail the vision and steps for implementing the program;
🔹 We will insist on commitment and political will;
🔹 We will continue to inform the public about the progress of the initiative.
We believe that the children of Bulgaria deserve a dignified hospital environment – everywhere, not just where volunteers and donors can help. It is time for this to become the policy, not the exception.
